TYLER (KYTX) - The school year is quickly approaching, but one lesson your children may not learn in textbooks is how to defend themselves in a bullying or kidnapping situation. That's why workers at East Texas Krav Maga are working to keep children well-equipped with those skills.
Krav Maga is the official hand-to-hand combat system for the Israeli military.
Nine-year-old Macy Adams says the classes have prepared her to handle any dangerous situation.
"If there's ever someone who you don't trust, or just don't think will be good to you, like at a store or some place, you know what to do, instead of just panicking." she says.
Studio owner and lead instructor Nathan Lundstrom says all Krav Maga children's classes are focused on anti-bullying and anti-abduction situations.
"At least be able to stand up for themselves and get away safely." he says. "Our biggest thing- it's not about winning the fight, it's getting away to safety."
Parents say knowing their children are equipped with self defense skills gives them peace of mind for when they send them off to school this year.
"You have to be aware and be ready for someone to potentially attack you, even at school of course." says parent Jamie Moeser.
Eleven-year-old Ryan Nault says she'll know what to do when she feels threatened or in danger. She says that makes her feel "safe and confident."
