Health Alert: Giving birth older may reduce cancer

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Giving birth at an older age may help reduce the risk of endometrial cancer -- that's the most common gynecological cancer in the U.S. Researchers at the School of Medicine conducted the largest study of it's kind. It compared women who had their last birth under the age of 25 to mothers who were 40 or older when they had their last child. Older births had a 44 percent reduced risk of endometrial cancer.

(CBS) - Stem cells extracted during liposuction could be used to help millions of people with heart disease. Researchers at the University of Oklahoma said they used stem cells to grow small blood vessels in a lab. The goal is to use the vessels in heart bypass surgery and other procedures, reducing the risk of rejection. Testing on animals is expected to happen within months.

(CBS) - Doctors in London say the first child to undergo a stem cell trachial transplant is doing well. Surgeons implanted a donor trachial into Kieran Finange two years ago, lining it with the boys own stem cells so his body wouldn't reject it. Researchers say the 13 year-old's new organ is getting stronger everyday and Kieran is back at school and breathing normally.
