UPDATE: Pedestrian in fatal accident identified

 Tyler, TX (KYTX) -- The pedestrian that was struck in the 5500 block of Troup Highway is identified as David Wayne Bickerdike, W/M, D.O.B 01/06/1971, of Tyler.   

Bickerdike was crossing the roadway mid-block on foot and was not in a crosswalk.  Bickerdike was struck by a north bound 2008 KIA Sorento, driven by Susan Helgesen, age 58, of Tyler. 

Helgesen did not see the pedestrian due to darkness and his clothing.

Tyler Police tell CBS19 evidence at the scene suggests Bickerdike was collecting aluminum cans from trash bins in the area for money before he was struck.

Officers are encouraging people to abide by the law and always use crosswalks when traveling on roads on foot.

Helgesen was not given a citation for the incident.


UPDATE: 7/30 8:05 AM:

Troup Highway in Tyler is back open this morning following a fatal pedestrian accident. It happened just before 5 am. Tyler Police tell us the pedestrian was in the northbound lane crossing by Wal-Mart. A vehicle traveling northbound hit him. The identity of the pedestrian has not been released, but we do know he was a 41 year old while male.


UPDATE: 7/30 7:14 AM:

Parts of Troup Highway in Tyler are back open this morning following that fatal pedestrian accident. Tyler Police tell us one northbound lane and one southbound lane between Shiloh and Thistle are closed at this time.


TYLER (KYTX) - A deadly accident has part of Troup Highway closed this morning. Tyler Police tell us the northbound lanes between Shiloh and Thistle are closed as well one southbound lane. Tyler Police say one person was killed in a pedestrian accident near the Wal-Mart on Troup Highway. This happened just before 5 o'clock.

We are working to get more information on the deadly accident. We'll bring it to you as we get it.
