(CBS) Tampa, Florida -- Tampa Police are investigating a shooting incident involving a Tennessee Titans football player in front of a Tampa high school Monday morning.

Police say 25-year-old Orenthal James (O.J.) Murdock was found in his car in front of Middleton High School suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Murdock died at Tampa General Hospital at 10:43 a.m.

According to CBS Sports, Murdock was excused from practice Sunday for the second day in a row citing personal reasons.

The Tennessee Titans released the following statement on O.J. Murdock's death Monday afternoon:

"We are shocked and saddened to hear of O.J. Murdock's death this morning. In his brief time here, a number of our players, coaches and staff had grown close to O.J., and this is a difficult time for them. He spent the last year battling back from an Achilles injury as he prepared for this year's training camp. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends as they try to cope with this tragedy."

Murdock graduated from Middleton High School in 2005 and started his prep career at Hillsborough High School as a starter on the varsity football team.

He played football with the South Carolina Gamecocks before transferring to Fort Hays State for two seasons. He signed with the Titans as an undrafted free agent on July 28, 2011.

Murdock was also a national champion sprinter at the age of 14.
