Race for Smith County Sheriff

Posted: Updated:

SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) - For the first time in 35 years, Smith County voters will elect a new sheriff for the county.

On Monday, Larry Smith and Chris Green were at their headquarters encouraging the people of Smith County to vote.

"We work for the people, all the people, and we want to represent everyone in Smith County equally," said Chris Green.

Chris Green holds a business degree from Dallas Baptist University and worked as business contractor before he entered law enforcement.

For 16 years, he was Smith County's game warden.

"I know this county better than anybody, it's roads, it's landowners and business owners, I feel like I am the most qualified," said Green.

Larry Smith think he's the most qualified, too. Smith has worked for more than three decades in law enforcement.

He began his career in the Gregg County Sheriff's Office, working there for 11 years, eventually earning the title of captain.

He ended his career as a federal agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

"It's very important for the sheriff to walk in the shoes of the men and women he expects to work those cases and to know what the men and woman of the law enforcement agency are doing," said Smith

Both men have faced their share of accusations from the other side.

"The truth out there can't get you in trouble and we haven't put anything out there that isn't truthful," said Green.

"I'm not willing to sacrifice my reputation , my credibility, my integrity to have sheriff in front of my name," added Smith.

Both men say they want to unite the county and put more deputies on the streets. But, it's going to be up to the people of Smith County, who they want to have the title of sheriff.
