Web Exclusive: Consumer Corner Report

Posted: Updated:

(CBS/CNN) - Business is booming for Chrysler.  The American car maker reported a $436 million dollar profit in the second quarter this year.

Quite a turnaround from last year, when it lost $370 million.  It was the best quarter for Chrysler since the company emerged from bankruptcy protection.

Hyundai is recalling nearly a quarter of a million vehicles in the U.S. because of air bag problems.  As many as 22,000 Sonatas from the model 2012 and 2013 model years are included.  The company says the cars' side airbags can deploy for no reason.

Hyundai is also recalling some 200,000 Santa Fe SUVs made between 2007 and 2009.  Their problem is that the front passenger airbag sometimes doesn't deploy.

Prices at grocery stores are skyrocketing this summer.  Corn prices surged to a record high as the worst drought in half a century impacts more of the country.  In just the past six weeks, corn prices have soared more than 50 percent.  Prices for soybeans and wheat also jumped. Analysts say that's pushing prices higher at the supermarket for beef, chicken and vegetable oil.

The U.S. postal service is losing money and the situation is growing more serious by the day. Something the postmaster general acknowledged on Capitol Hill this spring.  If Congress doesn't act by August 1st, the service will default on a five-point-five billion dollar payment to the federal government to cover retiree health benefits.  It would be the first default in its more than 200-year history.
