FRESH Ideas for Homemade Pizza

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - We all love pizza but sometimes it can be expensive, greasy and more of a guilty pleasure than a healthy food alternative. When making pizza at home you have the ability to control the ingredients, adjust the flavors and finally satisfy the whole family with each person's favorite toppings.

Some ideas for fresh toppings include sliced tomatoes, slivered zucchini or squash, fresh spinach, sliced mushrooms, chopped shallots, roasted garlic, asparagus spears and fresh herbs. Take a stroll through the FRESH produce department for more topping ideas.

When it comes to crust the foccacia bread from the FRESH bakery can be split in half and topped with ingredients. It's the perfect size for a personal pizza and cooks in just minutes.

The FRESH whole wheat tortillas also make a good crust, as well as packaged crust options in aisle two near the pasta.

Top your crust of choice with a homemade pasta sauce that contains less sodium and fresher flavors than many of the jarred varieties.

Homemade Pizza Sauce

1-12 ounce jar of low-sodium tomato puree or sauce

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano

1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

In a saucepan add the olive oil and garlic. Turn heat to medium and continue to stir until garlic is soft, but not browned. Add the tomato puree and remaining ingredients. Bring to a simmer and allow to simmer for 15 minutes. Check seasonings and add more salt or pepper to taste. Allow the sauce to cool before building the pizzas.
