Health Alert: Treatment change for breast cancer

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - A new study could change the standard treatment for women with advanced breast cancer. Researchers found combining two drugs, instead of giving them separately, increases the lifespan of patients. The study in the New England Journal of Medicine says women who took Anastrozole  and Fulvestrant at the same time lived more than six months longer. Researchers say their findings are the first to show that combination hormonal therapy alone, without chemotherapy, increases survival in advanced cases.

(CBS) - More moms are breast feeding in the US. A report card from the CDC says 77 percent of moms started breast feeding in 2009. That's up 2 percent from the previous year, and the largest one-year jump in ten years. Researchers say so-called baby-friendly hospitals have helped drive the increase in breast feeding, which studies show cuts an infant's risk of infection, allergies, diabetes and obesity.

(CBS) - New research shows pets can have a positive impact on autistic children. A French study concludes that autistic children introduced to pets have an increased willingness to share and give comfort. The improved social behaviors come a few years after the pets arrive. But researchers found children who had pets since birth showed weaker relationships with the animals. The study suggests that pets can help autistic children improve their social skills at a younger age.
