Gregg County Judge: 26-cent tax rate won't increase

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Gregg County boasts having the fifth-lowest property tax rate among Texas' 254 counties. County Judge Bill Stoudt said today that, though the rate could decrease, the 26-cent-per-$100-valuation rate will definitely not increase.

County commissioners will discuss setting and scheduling public hearings for the 2012 tax rate when they meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Gregg County Courthouse, 101 E. Methvin Street in Longview.

Stoudt said he expects county spending in 2012-2013 to almost mirror the current $48.7 million budget. Gregg County remains debt free.

Next year's budget will include about $12 million in capital spending, including more than $7 million in partnerships with area cities, economic groups and state highway officials for road enhancements to George Richey Road in North Longview and Texas 42 and U.S. 259 Bypass in Kilgore. Another $4 million is dedicated to terminal renovations and perimeter road improvements at the East Texas Regional Airport.

Each of the capital projects will pay off for Gregg County economic development and job creation, the judge said.

"I think we've got a lot of projects that will pay long term for Gregg County, and they all will be paid for," Stoudt said.
