National Hurricane Center names latest tropical storm

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Within the past hour, the National Hurricane Center has named Tropical Depression 5, Tropical Storm Ernesto.

Ernesto currently has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and will move through the Lesser Antilles Friday morning.

Tropical storm warnings are in place for Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica, St. Lucia, Martinique, and Guadeloupe. The National Hurricane Center is forecasting Ernesto to become a hurricane early next week as it passes near or south of Jamaica.

It's too early to tell the potential impact for the United States, but entry into the Gulf of Mexico would not occur before Aug. 8.
