Longview to honor life-saving measures of three residents

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Longview City Council members and Fire Chief J.P. Steelman will present three East Texans with honors Thursday for their recent efforts that potentially saved lives.

At a City Council meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at City Hall, Steelman will recognize Maria Lopez, who helped rescue a potential drowning victim in the 3600 block of McCann Road on June 3. Steelman will also recognize Don Hall and James Searcy for rescuing the driver of a submerged vehicle on July 9 at the intersection of Loop 281 and Sabine Street.

Both rescues occurred before Longview firefighters' arrival to the respective scenes, Steelman said.

In other business, the city council will hear a presentation from City Manager David Willard about his 2012-2013 municipal spending plan. Finance Director Angela Coen will propose a city property tax rate for 2012.

Council members will also consider mutual aid agreements with the Elderville-Lakeport Volunteer Fire Department and LeTourneau University for improved radio frequency communication between those agencies and the City of Longview's public safety communications.
