VAN ZANDT COUNTY (KYTX) - Investigators hope an autopsy can provide them with some answers after someone found two people dead in a Van Zandt County home near Ben Wheeler this morning.
Investigators are also trying to find a person of interest.
The Van Zandt County Sheriff says a family member of the two came to the house off of County Road 4812 today and found the couple.
Neighbors say they're shocked to hear what happened, and only knew the couple as friendly over the last 15 years they lived at the home.
The bodies of a man and woman, taken to the medical examiners office for an autopsy, after a family member found them dead inside their home on County Road 4812 and 4813 Friday.
"I didn't know them personally, but would speak to them as their neighbor," says Jerry Stone.
Stone says he's known the couple since they moved in.
"Seemed like nice people, they really did," says Stone.
He heard from his sister about their death, and the investigation surrounding it.
The Texas Rangers joined Van Zandt County investigators to collect evidence.
The Van Zandt County District Attorney, Chris Martin, says it appears the man and woman died earlier in the week.
"Decomposition is a factor, heat is also a factor. We have left that determination to the experts, those qualified doctors," says Martin.
One piece of evidence taken away was a black SUV found at the home reportedly stolen from Kauffman County.
All pieces of the puzzle that have left investigators with one sure thing.
"We do have a person of interest that we are seeking, that I believe is going to help reveal a lot about what's occurred here today," says Martin.
An investigation into a possible double homicide in a quiet part of the country.
"As a matter of fact, we'd go outside and leave the doors open. Both of us outside, I don't know about now," says Stone.
Stone worries if someone is responsible for these deaths, they're still on the loose.
"I just hate that it happened. Whatever happened," says Stone.
Investigators have not released the name of the man and woman.
The district attorney did say the person of interest has been identified and other police agencies have been notified.
The district attorney says they are not releasing the person of interest's name, but do know who they're looking for.
Investigators are waiting on autopsy results to determine the cause of death.
