Health Alert: Few kids use recommended safety restraints in cars

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - New research shows many kids are still not using age appropriate safety restraints in cars -- and many are still placed at risk riding in the front seat. Children are supposed to stay in the back seat facing backwards until age two. And they're not supposed to move to the front seat until age 13. But the new findings from the University of Michigan show that kids rarely sit facing backwards after age one and are often in the front seat after seven years old.

(CBS) - Obese people who have weight loss surgery-- like gastric bypass or gastric band surgery are not at greater risk for broken bones in the first few years after their procedures. Studies have shown that weight loss can lead to a reduction in bone density. But University of South Hampton researchers found that the overall risk of fracture was not significantly increased because of surgery.

(CBS) - People who use long term blood pressure medications may be at greater risk for developing lip cancer. The Kaiser Permanente study finds that drugs such as Nifedipine and Hydrochlorothiazide cannot only make a patient sensitive to sunlight, but can increase the risk for cancer in the outer most layers of their lips and skin. However, researchers say the lip cancer risk is are, and the that the benefits of the blood pressure drugs outweigh any risk.
