Ernesto makes landfall on Yucatan Peninsula

(CBS) - Hurricane Ernesto makes landfall on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The Category One storm hit with sustained winds of 85-miles-per-hour late Tuesday night.

Tourists were evacuated from Cancun and other parts of the Yucatan Peninsula. Residents also boarded windows in preparation. Ernesto strengthened from a tropical storm to a hurricane Tuesday.

Meanwhile, rescue operations are underway in the Philippines this morning where monsoon rains have triggered flooding in areas throughout the country. As much as 20 inches of rain fell on Manilla Tuesday.

There are varying reports of deaths. At least a dozen people have died but some reports say that number could be as high as 50. More than 780-thousand people across the country have been forced from their homes.
