Man sentenced to 30 years in prison on 2010 murder

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - A jury that rejected a Gilmer man's self-defense claim last week handed down a 30-year prison term on Monday.

Gregg County jurors needed about five hours before reaching consensus on 35-year-old James Nathan Alexander's punishment Monday. On Friday, the jury found him guilty of the July 2010 fatal shooting of Brian Keith Barnett at the Riverside RV Park on Texas 42 at the Sabine River.

Alexander faced up to life in prison and a minimum of five years.

Alexander, who still faces a firearm theft charge in the county, claimed that he shot Barnett in self defense. He was defended by Longview attorney Scott Novy.

The case was prosecuted by Gregg County Assistant District Attorney Tanya Reed in the 188th District Court.
