EAST TEXAS (KYTX) - Texas Comptroller Susan Combs announced Wednesday that state sales tax allocations in August increased 4.2 percent compared to August 2011.
Several East Texas cities – Tyler, Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Henderson and Mount Pleasant – saw more modest increases in sales tax revenue, while some other cities fared not so well.
Among East Texas' largest communities, no city marked as giant a leap in sales as Athens. The Henderson County seat saw monthly sales tax allocations increase 25.1 percent, from $401,519 in August 2011, to $502,326 this month.
To more simply explain the increase, for every $4 spent in Athens one year ago, $5 was spent in the city during the same period this year.
August sales tax allocations represent monthly sales made in June, as well as April, May and June sales by businesses that quarterly report tax. Statewide, August sales tax
