UPDATE: The Corpus Christi Caller-Times newspaper is reporting that Cantu also faces a charge of engaging in organized street gang activity.

Two weeks ago, police arrested Andrew Garcia, 23, the Tuesday after the July 22 shooting in Alice; Daniel Robledo, 54, who was taken to the hospital after he was hurt in a crash following the shooting; and Antonio Castillo, 19, who already had been charged with suspicion of unlawfully carrying a weapon. Castillo was picked up by U.S. Marshals on a bus in Grenada, Miss. All were arrested on suspicion of murder.

According to the Caller-Times, the catalyst for the series of arrests was a shootout at about 3 a.m. July 22 in the 300 block of Nayer Street. Isaac Vela, 18, who was standing outside a home, died when he was shot in the head.

A Ford Escape sped off and was chased by another vehicle before the SUV crashed into St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Dagoberto Baiza, 25, Juan Benavides, 29, and Omar Beltran, 30, who were in the Ford, died. Robledo was taken to a Corpus Christi hospital in critical condition.

Beltran died of injuries from the wreck, and Baiza and Benavides died of gunshot wounds, authorities told the newspaper.

NACOGDOCHES (KYTX) - A suspect in a rash of South Texas gang violence that left four men dead was arrested this week in Nacogdoches.

According to KRIS NBC 6 in Corpus Christi, Nacogdoches authorities arrested David Cantu, Jr., within hours after Alice police issued a warrant for his arrest.

He will be extradited to Jim Wells County today.

Cantu is among dozens of people suspected in a July 22 shooting and wreck in Alice. According to NBC 6, a wave of gang violence began with a drive-by shooting in the 300 block of Nayer Street, followed by a car crash a short time later.

Police blamed the violence on two rival gangs – the Latin Kings, and La Raza Unida. In the following week, two related shootings occurred, and police, Texas Rangers and DPS troopers arrested dozens of suspects in the case.

Jim Wells County's district attorney told NBC 6 that Cantu fired a shotgun into a car on Nayer Street, killing two men.
