(KCEN) -- When people with high-functioning Autism gain independence, it can be both scary and exciting for their parents.
That's why a north Texas father is pushing for a way for police to identify Autistic drivers and help avoid tense confrontations.
Autistic drivers would have decals on their cars, giving first responders and police a heads up when approaching the vehicle.
Brent Carmichael created the sticker through his 4U Academy, a non-profit organization that helps families touched by Autism.
He said, "If there's an emblem, or there's a way an officer, once he stops you, or a firefighter who comes to a fire and sees something in the window, that they automatically know that there's someone with Autism in that vehicle or in that home that their training would kick in."
Carmichael also supports creating a voluntary Autism 911 registry for families.
During an emergency call, dispatchers would be able to give police and firefighters valuable information about the person.
