Local nonprofit won't cancel Travis concert despite arrest

EAST TEXAS (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - Randy Travis' recent DWI troubles won't prevent him from performing at an upcoming Texas Wounded Warrior event in East Texas. At least, not if the event's organizers have any say about it.

Ron Nash, co-founder and chairman of the board of directors of Texas Wounded Warrior, said Travis will be welcomed with open arms at the four-day event in late September.

"As far as I know he is (still scheduled to perform)," Nash said. "He's a friend, and all I can do is say prayers for him and hope he gets better and go from there."
Nash said it's not their place to pass judgment on Travis, especially after the generosity he has shown the organization in the past.

"We look at it this way, the guy made a mistake. We're not going to back out on him. If he wants to come and sing with us, he's going to come and sing with us. He loves the Wounded Warriors," Nash said. "He's dedicated a lot of his time and money to the Wounded Warriors and he's been a big help in raising a lot of money for us.

"Last year he gave a concert with no charge to us and we raised $50,000 in one night, and it all goes to help these guys. So, as far as I'm concerned, he's a saint."

Beginning Sept. 28 and running through Oct. 1, in addition to Travis' performance and appearance, the event will include a private reception at Rio Neches Ranch, a skeet shoot and a Pro-Am golf tournament.
