Forest Service: Fire near Neches destroys hay farming equipment

ANDERSON COUNTY (KYTX) - A four-acre fire near Neches destroyed a structure and farm equipment but left no injuries, according to the Texas Forest Service.

The agency's assistant regional fire coordinator, David Abernathy, told KYTX CBS 19 that the blaze was heavy around a hay operation. The property owner lost a barn, a hay bailer, a tractor and two four-wheelers in the blaze.

While it was the only Anderson County fire that forest service officials responded to, Abernathy said firefighters responded to several other wildfires in Anderson County today.

The Neches fire and a 16-acre wildfire southeast of Marshall in Harrison County are 100 percent contained, the forest service also reports a seven-acre fire in Van Zandt County north of Van that is zero percent contained.

Abernathy said he was on his way to Palo Pinto County west of Fort Worth to assist authorities in battling three fires – the Longhollow Fire, the Dark Valley Fire and the Rhodes Ranch II Fire – that have consumed more than 3,400 acres of land. According to cbsdfw.com, 15 homes are threatened by the Dark Valley Fire, and Gov. Rick Perry has sent two helicopters to assist more than a dozen local fire agencies.
