JFK airport increases security after man breaches system

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK CITY (KYTX) - Police patrols are now increased around New York's Kennedy airport.

That's after port authority security agents say a man breezed past the airport's security system.

Daniel Casillo reportedly became stranded on his personal watercraft in Jamaica Bay right next to the airport during a nighttime ride over the weekend.

He swam three miles toward the airport's lights and scaled an eight-foot barbed wire fence.

Casillo's cousin says he had no choice.

A criminal complaint states that a delta airlines worker saw Casillo walk across the runway behind terminal three past security cameras and motion sensors. The worker then notified police.

JFK airport's state-of-the-art security system cost $100 million. It's designed to safeguard against terrorists.

The port authority says its goal is to keep the airport safe at all times.

The port authority says it is planning on meeting with the security system manufacturer this week.
