Maxwell murder trial set to begin next week

Posted: Updated:

GILMER (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) — A jury was selected Monday in the murder trial of Sharon Anne Maxwell, with testimony scheduled to open Monday in 115th District Court.

Mrs. Maxwell, 44, of Ore City, is charged with shooting her 10th husband, 46-year-old Gordon Lynn Maxwell, on Aug. 30. Maxwell's body was found in a burned car at the couple's Ore City-area home on Texas Highway 155, but an autopsy showed he died from a gunshot wound, Upshur County District Attorney Billy Byrd said.

Mrs. Maxwell's court-appointed lawyer, Gilmer attorney Matthew Patton, said Monday her defense will be "she was not the shooter."

Testimony is expected to last all next week, Byrd said. A six-man, six-woman jury was chosen for the case, along with two male alternates, he said.

Judge Lauren Parish of the 115th District Court is presiding in the trial.
