ALVIN (KHOU) – Police in Alvin shot and killed a man accused of holding his girlfriend at gunpoint for several hours overnight Monday.
It all started shortly before 10 p.m. when officers responded to the sound of gun shots at the Newport Oaks apartment complex in the 800 block of E. South, according to the Alvin Police Department.
Police found a man with two superficial gunshot wounds and rushed him to the hospital.
The alleged shooter was located in a nearby truck with his ex-girlfriend, where he held a gun to her head for the next five hours, police said.
A SWAT team was called in, and police made the decision to take out the 47-year-old suspect.
"He had the gun to her head, but he made a movement like he was going to shoot her," said Police Chief Mike Merkel. "The officers had to take a shot, and they had to take a shot only at a time that they knew they wouldn't accidentally take her life or injure her."
The 40-year-old female was sent to the hospital to be looked over but was expected to be physically okay.
Police later identified the wounded male as the woman's new boyfriend. They said the shooter had just lost his job and was upset over his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend.
Police said the suspect's first name was Stephen but did not release a last name.
The shooting victim was expected to make a full recovery, police said.
