Inside the mind of a suspected killer

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - We're learning more about the mind of suspected killer Thomas Caffall of College Station.

"A lot of these people who commit these crimes, outwardly, a lot of times look very normal." says psychologist Dr. Wilson Renfroe. "There's a lot of change in their life and they may have a storehouse of weapons in a bedroom someplace, but we don't know that until retrospect."

In the case of 35-year-old Thomas Caffall, it is only in hindsight that people started paying attention to the extensive weapons collection he often talked about and showed off on Facebook.

In reference to this rifle, he comments "I won an auction. This will be coming to me soon. I can't wait to try it out."

"there's usually pretty clear warning signs, but people just don't pick up on them." says Dr. Renfroe.

He says many times disturbed people are introverted, and Caffall's stepfather, Richard Weaver says his son spent plenty of his time alone playing video games. So much, Weaver claims, it was starting to affect his son's reality.

"Their thoughts that they have tend to kind of ruminate in their minds over and over again and tend to kind of just build over time and become very irrational." says Dr. Renfroe

Dr. Renfroe says one of the most telling signs you can look for in a person is change in personality or behavior.

"They drop in and out of things. With adults, change in work behavior."

Caffall's stepdad says his son did quit his job and refused to work.

"It happens over a period of time and these things kind of build up." says Dr. Renfroe.

Caffall's family says they suspected he was suffering from an illness, but never sought help for him.

Dr. Renfroe says children suffering from a mental illness are much easier to help because they can be forced into treatment. It is much harder to help adults suffering unless they commit themselves.
