ANGELINA COUNTY (KYTX) - Melanie Bazor never met Rosa Pina. In fact, Bazor is a friend of a friend of the woman now caring for Pina's eldest daughter after Pina and her brother were fatally stabbed on July 16.
Despite unfamiliarity, Bazor's faith is leading her to organize a school supply and clothing drive to benefit the homicide victim's four daughters.
The drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Lufkin's Dollar Tree, at 2215 South First Street. The store was Pina's employer.
"I'm sure I'll meet many of (Pina's family members) Saturday, but I have yet to meet any of them," Bazor, a mother herself, told CBS 19 tonight. "I'm a woman of faith, and I hope God leaves me here for a long time."
Pina and her brother were fatally stabbed on John Kolb Road near Lufkin in July. According to the Lufkin Daily News, the children witnessed the act, and a 31-year-old Center man confessed to the murders following his arrest.
Bazor said donations of money, school supplies, clothes, shoes and gift cards would be appreciated for the four girls, ages 3 to 10. The drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Lufkin's Dollar Tree, at 2215 South First Street.
"Even if only a dollar or five dollars, every little bit helps," Bazor told the newspaper. "For the family members who took them in, this just makes it less of a financial strain."
