Tyler ISD unveils new bus route system to reduce ride time

Posted: Updated:

Released by Tyler Independent School District

TYLER (KYTX) - The Tyler ISD Transportation Department will begin using a new bus routing system effective the first day of school, Monday, Aug 27.

The new system will assist us in providing better services to students by minimizing their time on the bus and ensuring timely arrivals to and from campus.

In the past, students spent up to an hour and a half on the bus. With the new system, most students will spend between 30 and 45 minutes on the bus. In addition to shorter ride times, the District will save at least $100,000 per year by reducing mileage and the time drivers and monitors spend on the bus.

One result of the new system will be the creation of neighborhood bus stops. Instead of stopping at each household, the buses will stop in centralized locations to pick up students.

To reach these neighborhood stops, most students will walk less than 300 feet, or the length of one football field. The maximum distance students will have to walk will be a quarter of a mile for elementary students and half a mile for secondary students.

Students will be dropped off at the same location where they are picked up in the morning. Tyler ISD requires that someone 18 years of age or older must meet kindergarten and first grade students.

Bus routes for students with special needs will remain relatively unchanged, except for adjustments to pick-up times.

"We feel this new system will better serve our students by reducing the time they spend on the bus each day," Tyler ISD Transportation Director John Bagert said. "Student safety has been, and will continue to be, our top priority in using the new bus route system."

Letters have been mailed to the parents of all bus riders informing them of their child's pick up location and time. The information can also be found on the Tyler ISD website, www.tylerisd.org, by clicking on the "Route Information" link and following the instructions.
