"Sisters in Christ" founder jailed

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -- The founder of a shelter for battered women is going to jail for writing hot checks. 47-year-old Michelle Johnson pleaded guilty to felony theft by check Wednesday afternoon and received a sentence of 15 months in state jail.

Prosecutors said Johnson wrote nearly 100 hot checks between 1987 and 2009. Johnson told Judge Jack Skeen Jr. that most of those were mis-understandings, and asked for probation.

"I can remember back in 1987 I was 22 or 23 years old and I did not have the knowledge of how to balance a check book," Johnson said.

Assistant District Attorney Jason Parrish asked if Johnson would agree that her hot checks hurt the East Texas community. She said she would not agree with that.

Johnson's Plea covered six hot checks she wrote in 2009. Those checks were written from an account belonging to Johnson's charity "Sisters in Christ." They totaled more than $10,000 dollars, and Johnson will be required to pay that back.
