According to the Bryan/College Station Eagle
CALVERT (KYTX) - Calvert athletic director and head football coach Coylin Grimes was
arrested on federal drug charges Friday, stunning school officials two
weeks before the start of football season.
Calvert is a town of about 1,200 residents on Texas 6 between Waco and Bryan.
Grimes, 38, was booked into the Bell County Jail on Friday afternoon and was being held for the U.S. Marshals Service.
Members
of the Department of Public Safety's Criminal Investigation Division
took Grimes into custody Friday morning, according to a DPS spokesman.
Grimes
was charged with conspiracy to deliver cocaine and accessory to
criminal activity. The spokesman said Grimes would be taken from the
Bell County Jail to the Harwell Federal Detention Center in Waco.
The
arrest was part of a Robertson County drug investigation that began
early in 2011. Grimes is the 14th person arrested in connection with the
probe. Taurean Grimes, the coach's brother, is among those who have
been arrested, according to the DPS.
Calvert ISD
superintendent Maxie Morgan said he first learned of Grimes' arrest from
an Internet report Friday afternoon. Grimes was not on campus when he
was arrested, according to the superintendent.
"It is
shocking," Morgan said. "It's kind of hard to believe. You're innocent
until you're proven guilty, but we have to look at the situation and
move forward with school."
Morgan said school officials soon will make a decision on Grimes' job status and who will lead the Calvert football program.
The
Trojans began preseason workouts two weeks ago with two football
coaches, Grimes and assistant Marcus Wortham. Morgan said the school
district is considering hiring an interim head coach or putting Wortham
in charge.
Last spring Wortham was head coach of the Calvert boys basketball team that won the Class A Division II state championship.
"I will say coach Wortham would be very worthy and able to step in and take the football team over," Morgan said.
Grimes
is a former Calvert standout who went on to play at the University of
North Texas. He has served as the Trojans' head coach since 1999,
building a record of 127-20.
He led Calvert to the 6-man state championship in 2002.
Morgan has worked with Grimes for three years.
"I've
had nothing but good experiences with coach Grimes," Morgan said. "He's
always been a loyal employee. He's very well respected in the
community."
Grimes played for Calvert from 1989-91
when the Trojans competed in 11-man football. He still holds the school
record with 144 career pass receptions.
The Trojans
have a preseason scrimmage scheduled for Aug. 25. Calvert's season
opener is set for Aug. 31 against Sugar Land Logos in Alvin.
Calvert ISD will begin fall classes Aug. 27.
"I
don't anticipate that it's going to affect the progress and the start
of school any," Morgan said. "I'm sure it will be talked about. When you
face things like this you do what you can and continue to move
forward."
