Parents step out for tax free weekend

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - It's a big weekend for shopping, and for headaches when you try to find a parking spot.

But parents still say they're cashing in on tax free weekend to save and businesses aren't complaining.

Joanna Silva spent all day Saturday scouring the isles for everything her daughter needs to head back to school at Stewart Middle School.

"We've already spent $130 at Walmart, $60 at payless and now we're here," says Silva.

When asked if she was done, she says, "not by a long shot."

Silva hasn't finished the list.

And the biggest problem, she can't find uniforms.

"Can wear yellow, gold, black and khaki. Been difficult to find them," says Silva.

There was no short supply of shoppers at Target, as people filled the isles looking to save up 8% on approved items.

"Little better than last year. Obviously busy, tons of clothes, backpacks, school supplies," says manager Mike Garrett.

Managers say people aren't just looking to buy what's tax free this weekend. They're buying other items too, like refrigerators and microwaves to send their kids to college and put in their dorms.

"Just adds to the sales, increased sales in other areas," says Garrett.

A big boost to stores this summer, even if some items prove to be hard to find.

And a drop in the cart for savings, with a bigger turnout than some years past.

"Lot of people out today. I can't blame them! Save here, save there. Especially when you have more than one kids in school," says Silva.
