Weather halts West Nile spraying

Posted: Updated:

DALLAS (CNN) -- A third night of aerial spraying to combat the West Nile virus in Dallas County, Texas  put on hold because of storms Saturday.

The treatment is designed to kill any mosquito larvae that hatched since the first spraying on Thursday. But, due to rain and strong winds, county officials said they'll have to wait until Sunday night to begin spraying again.

"There will be no spraying tonight," Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said. "The weather patterns are such that the mission for tonight has been scrapped. We cannot effectively get the mist out there when it is raining or when the winds are at very high speed with any sense of precision."

At least 14 deaths have been associated with West Nile in North Texas. One death has been reported in East Texas.
