Health Alert: Risk of anesthesia in young kids

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - New research shows children exposed to anesthesia-- even once before the age of three-- had an increased risk for long-term problems with language and reasoning skills. The study analyzed more than 26 hundred children in Australia, more than 300 of them were exposed to anesthesia before the age of 3. The type of anesthetic likely used on the children in the 80's and 90's is no longer available, but the researchers say other anesthetics that were tested on animals have similar effects.

(CBS) - An antioxidant found in red wine and dark-skinned fruits could help improve balance and mobility -- and prevent falls among older people. Those are the findings of a report presented at a scientific meeting in Philadelphia. Researchers looked at the effect of the molecule called resveratrol on lab mice. They say the results could lead to the development of natural products that would improve the lives of elderly Americans.

(CBS) - A new study shows children who are exposed to second-hand smoke have a weakened ability to cough. Coughing helps protect the lungs and keeps airways clear. Scientists say that may be the reason kids-- exposed to smoke-- are more likely to develop pneumonia, bronchitis and other diseases.
