Fourteen cases of West Nile virus confirmed in four ET counties

Posted: Updated:

EAST TEXAS (KYTX) - The Northeast Texas Public Health District has confirmed 14 cases of West Nile virus in seven East Texas counties, including six cases in Gregg County.

The district reports four cases of the virus confirmed in Smith County, three cases in Van Zandt County and one case in Henderson County. No West Nile virus cases have been confirmed in Anderson, Rains or Wood counties.

The Northeast Texas Public Health District is urging people to take precautions to reduce the risk of contracting West Nile virus, a mosquito borne illness. People should use insect repellent, containing DEET, when outdoors and avoid going outside at dusk and dawn.

There has been a higher than usual number of human West Nile cases in Texas this year due to the warm winter and recent rains, particularly in the North Texas region.
