Health Alert: Breast reconstruction surgery

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is launching a show and tell event to help women see what breast reconstruction surgery looks like before breast cancer treatments. A survey of about 12 hundred women shows that 89 percent want to see the real results in person on other cancer survivors. Researchers say less than a quarter of women know what type of breast reconstruction options are available.

(CBS) - British researchers say accupunture could serve as an alternative to knee surgery for osteoarthritits. In 2008, 90 patients with severe symptoms for osteoarthritis were given acupuncture treatments once a week and later every six weeks. The patients showed improvements in pain levels, stiffness and functional capacity after just one month of treatment.

(CBS) - A new survey shows almost 1 in 2 physicians suffers from burnout. The poll of more than 7 thousand physicians found that 45 percent reported at least one symptom of burnout. Doctors that practice emergency medicine, neurology and family medicine showed the highest rates. Pathology, dermatology and general pediatrics were at lower risk. Researchers say more work needs to be done to understand physician burnout.
