TYLER/SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) - On Friday, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler will welcome the inaugural class of students in its Master of Science in Biotechnology Program.

Orientation for the six master's students will be held from 9:20 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, in the North Cafeteria Conference Room at UTHSCT, located at the intersection of U.S. 271 and Texas Highway 155.

The UTHSCT biotechnology master's program began 16 years ago as a collaboration with Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. Students applied through SFA but attended classes and did their research at UTHSCT.

Students enrolled in the biotechnology program this fall will be the first to graduate with a degree from UTHSCT rather than SFA, said Pierre Neuenschwander, Ph.D., director of academic administration.

"We have 26 research and teaching faculty in our biotechnology program, all of whom have doctorates or medical degrees," he added.

"There is a growing demand for master's-level biotechnology graduates at biotechnology companies and forensic labs. In addition, many of these graduates get their Ph.D.'s and become biomedical researchers or get their medical degrees and become physicians who also do research," Dr. Neuenschwander said.

The students and Dr. Neuenschwander will be available for photos and interviews from about 9:20 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. To set up an interview, call media specialist Toni Moore at (903) 877-7079, office, or (903) 452-1963, cell.
