TJC passes $75 million budget, higher tax rate

Posted: Updated:

TYLER/SMITH COUNTY (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - Tyler Junior College passed a new budget and tax rate today.

The $75 million budget is up nearly $1 million from last year, and the tax rate is up slightly, just less than two cents per $100 dollar valuation.

TJC is using the $25 million bond package approved by voters earlier this year and another $25 million in private donations to build a new health sciences building on campus.

Last year TJC increased both tuition and fees, but it is not happening this year.

The college anticipates a fall enrollment of 11,000, which will bring in about the same amount of money in tuition and fees as last year.

A big spending increase will go to funding TJC's Lindale campus. Since opening in 2009, enrollment has tripled there.

However, for the third straight year, most employees will not be getting a raise.
