(KYTX) - Tropical Storm Isaac is swirling in the Caribbean tonight, gradually making its way to Florida's coastline. Fortunately, help is on the way, from right here in East Texas.
Three Red Cross volunteers from the Smith County chapter are headed to Tampa.
East Texas Red Cross Volunteer Specialist Linda Edwards says the team will stay in Florida for at least two weeks, depending on what kind of damage Isaac brings.
Edwards says the last time Smith County Red Cross volunteers were called out for disaster relief was for this summer's Colorado wildfires. She says all of her volunteers are ready to go at a moment's notice.
"It makes all of us at the Smith County chapter very proud of our local volunteers because they're willing to give up their time to go and help others."
Edwards says whether they're building shelters or providing medical care, it's an exhausting job, but they're glad to do it.
"They'll come home with such wonderful stories- sad stories too, but wonderful stories about helping the folks and what difference they can make." she says.
About 50,000 people are headed to Florida for the Republican National Convention Monday.
At least for now, the group's communications director says the political event will go on as planned- rain or shine.
