Fit City Success: Bob Moore on a mission to get people walking

Posted: Updated:

TYLER/SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) - It's a topic Bob Moore is very passionate about these days. The 80-year-old believes if he can pound the pavement everyday and eat the right food, then other seniors just like him can, too.

It wasn't that long ago he could barely keep up with his wife and grown children.

Less than 10 years ago, Bob Moore weighed in at almost 240 pounds, and a dangerously high blood pressure. He says he was in terrible shape.

"Our youngest son is an iron man and I was not in good enough shape to walk from where he gets out swimming to... to where he takes off all that rubber stuff and puts on his bicycle stuff. I had to stop and take a breath, and it just made me mad."

At the time, he was taking nine pills a day to manage his health and high blood pressure. Now he is down to one.

"I said if I keep on eating and drinking like I eat and drink and if I keep on not doing a dog gone thing with exercise, and if I keep on with the stress I got, where will I be in 5 years? I said I am going to die. That's not a real good conclusion."

Bob decided to take charge of his life. He walks an hour a day. He's kept that up for 6 years now.

"I went to Tyler to register to walk the half marathon, not knowing what I was doing and I came back to Tyler to train right here in this park. And I did it in 4 hours and 6 minutes."

In 2006, Bob started keeping track of how many steps he's walked.  "Since this morning, it was 16 million 198 thousand steps, but it is one step at a time," says Bob.

Gradually, the weight started coming off.

"These are size 36. I think the last time I was in a size 36 was the 6th or 7th grade, this is a medium shirt down from the big X."

Bob not only feels better than he ever has. He says his attitude and thought process are also better.

Bob says he also changed the way he thinks about food. He balances out his protein and carbs with a little bit of fat to keep him trim and his blood pressure on target.

Bob says if he can get his message across to the "older than average people," he's accomplished what he set out to do.
