62 TISD bus routes to change Monday

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Virtually every TISD bus route will change starting Monday.

We found out what's different for you.

From the time your kids board the bus, to the time they get to school.

"The average time is about 45 minutes," says John Bagert, TISD's Transportation Director.

Bagert says 62 routes are changing, from the number of students picked up, to how early the doors open, it all comes down to less time on the roads and less time spent idle.

"Some cases it brings student ride time from one hour and thirty minutes to less than an hour. That is our target, to have student off the buss no longer than an hour after the boarding the bus," says Bagert.

Most changes are in the city, like this route with Jim Mcdougal in North Tyler, the district cut the drive time in half here.

"Before we would serpentine in and out of the whole neighborhood running this route," says McDougal.

Before they would pick up at individual houses, taking up to 30 seconds at each stop for 7-8 kids that can all be picked up at one time before the bus drives off.

"These streets here and might be some over there to the left come down, next street over, come down and catch it here," says McDougal.

By making a centralized pick up and drop off point, the district saves more than just time.

"It reduces my fuel and operations costs, reduces my labor costs and helps TISD overall finically," says Bagert.

Hoping to save about $100,000 and get kids moving faster to and from school.
