Dedication held for new Lighthouse for the Blind facility

Posted: Updated:

TYLER/SMITH COUNTY (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - A dedication ceremony for Lighthouse for the Blind's newly renovated building.

Lighthouse leaders emphasized a theme employers may take for granted - blindness doesn't mean helplessness.

The Lighthouse for the Blind acquired an 8,000-square-foot facility at 411 West Front Street from PATH and renovated it as its new rehabilitative services building. And we're told this facility offers blind and visually impaired adaptive technology and educational training. it includes a "low vision store" that has retail products to assist with vision problems.

It also has an educational wing where the visually impaired can learn computer skills and job readiness. And there's a rehabilitative wing that features a life skills training apartment – with a kitchen, washer and dryer, table and a bed.

In all, the project cost about $1.2 million.
