Preparing for a hurricane

Posted: Updated:

As of Sunday night, Hurricane Isaac's path is still uncertain. It's always best to prepare early but it doesn't hurt to start now if you haven't

On August 29th, 2005 Katrina rips across the Gulf Coast devastating Gulf Port Mississippi and New Orleans, Louisiana becoming the costliest disaster in the United States.

On Katrina's 7th year anniversary, Hurricane Isaac is projected to make landfall, the only question that remains is where.

The Beaumont Police Department works closely with the city's Emergency Management Department in times like these.

"Anytime there's a storm in the Gulf, we stay close to it. We communicate with the weather service and just try to get the message out there and keep everyone prepared," Ofc. Riley said.

Police advise stocking up on essentials and taking care of priorities.

"Have you're Go-Kit ready, have your medications filled, have a plan for your animals, call 311 and make sure you're registered so we can keep you updated," Ofc. Riley said.

The Beaumont Chapter of the American Red Cross recommends stocking up on a 7 day supply of food and water, a first aid kit, identification, and extra clothing if you plan to evacuate.

Also now your evacuation routes, the main one leading out of Southeast Texas is Highway 69 North but officials advise having a back up route planned as well. Those who wish to stay have a list of their own supplies.

Lanterns, a generator, batteries, duct tape, and extension cords are key essentials along with food and water.

Either way, planning and preparedness are the key to making it through a hurricane.

It's mother nature. We can't predict what happens, we just everyone to stay on guard," Ofc. Riley said.
