Woman gets life sentence, $10,000 fine for murdering her 10th husband

GILMER (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) -- A 115th District Court jury today sentenced Sharon Anne Maxwell to life imprisonment and fined her $10,000 after convicting her Friday of the 2011 murder of her tenth husband.

Defense attorney Matthew Patton said he would file a motion for a new trial, and that 115th District Judge Lauren Parish appointed attorney Tim Cone to handle any appeal.

Jurors deliberated only about an hour before deciding the punishment after hearing seven witnesses in the trial's punishment phase this morning. The guilty verdict Friday followed four days of testimony.

Mrs. Maxwell, a 44-year-old former Upshur County jailer, had pled not guilty last Tuesday to fatally shooting 46-year-old Gordon Lynn Maxwell last Aug. 30. Although his charred body was found in his burned pickup outside their residence near Ore City, an autopsy showed he died of "homicidal violence," including multiple gunshot wounds.

The autopsy showed Maxwell had been shot four times in the head, and evidence indicated he had been slain in the couple's master bedroom before his body was dragged on a comforter out to his pickup.

Jurors viewed video tapes of Mrs. Maxwell first telling an investigator that her husband attacked her with the gun, and that it somehow went off without her trying to hurt him. Then last March, she changed her story, saying one of her relatives shot Maxwell. The relative denied that in testimony Friday.

Upshur County District Attorney Billy Byrd asked the jury for a life sentence.
