Gregg County commissioners decrease property tax rate

An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Gregg County reduced motor vehicle registration fees. However, they remained at $9  in the 2012-2013 budget.

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Gregg County commissioners today approved a 26.25-cent property tax rate to fund its 2012-13 budget.

The new tax rate reflects a quarter-cent decrease from the 2011 rate and is the third rate decrease for Gregg County since 2007. For taxpayers, it amounts to a $2.50 tax reduction for every $100,000 in property valuation.

County Judge Bill Stoudt said Gregg County maintains one of the five lowest tax rates among similarly sized counties in Texas.

Commissioners held two required public hearings on the tax rate because it resulted in an overall tax revenue increase for the county. Last year's 26.5-cent property tax rate generated $20.246 million in revenue; This year's rate is expected to generate $20.511 million because of increased property values countywide, with more than half of the $481,000 in added revenue due to new property on the Gregg County tax rolls from 2011.

Most county employees except elected officials saw a 3 percent salary and compensation increase in the $59.94 million budget for 2012-13.

Gregg County does not currently have long term debt. All outstanding bonds were paid in full in Fiscal Year 08. Short term obligations include lease/purchase of copiers for several departments.
