Report: Van Cliburn diagnosed with bone cancer

FORT WORTH/TARRANT COUNTY (KHOU) - Kilgore-native Van Cliburn, one of the best-known figures in the North Texas arts community, has advanced bone cancer, according to a report published in The New York Times.

The newspaper says the 78-year-old pianist was diagnosed 10 days ago, and is undergoing treatment and resting at home.

Cliburn was born in Shreveport, and achieved worldwide acclaim by winning the first Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow when he was just 23 years old.

His foundation hosts a quadrennial international piano competition in Fort Worth which is a showcase for the world's finest young musicians.
