According to the Shreveport Times
SHREVEPORT/CADDO PARISH (KYTX) - A Longview man's images from the Vietnam War are on display in a Shreveport art gallery.
The R.W. Norton Art Gallery and its foundation opened a curated show today of 80 black-and-white Vietnam War combat photos that are being shown to the public for the first time. The photos by Robert Spangler, a Sp5 combat correspondent for the U.S. Army from May 1970 until April 1971, were shot and processed on the battlefield, according to a
report in today's Shreveport Times.
Spangler was a battlefield photographer and an infantryman.
On Sept. 8, the museum will host a "Guests of Honor" day, where as many as 25 veterans portrayed in the photos will be treated to lunch and a special tour of the display. There also will be an opportunity for the public to meet the men from the photos.
"I enjoyed what I did but I didn't enjoy war, I enjoyed the job I had. I got to taste just about everything, a variety of different experiences," Spangler told the Times. "I flew on the 'dustoff' (medical evacuation) choppers, I flew on the gunships. I went out in the field. I would have never been allowed to, but I would have loved to have flown in a Cobra gunship — that would have been a trip."
The R.W. Norton Art Gallery is located at 4747 Creswell Avenue in Shreveport.
