Filipino group in Tyler rolling for world eggroll record

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - The Tyler area's Filipino community, fresh off a eggroll fund-raiser for a cancer victim, has decided to swing for the culinary fence and attempt to set a world record for the most simultaneously rolled eggrolls, according to a news release today.

Filipino-Americans of East Texas on Sunday will gather at the Lone Star Event Center, 4036 FM 2767 in Tyler, to get rolling on the event, which will run 3-6 p.m. The event is open to the public, with $10 donations requested.

"When Guinness officials learned of the fundraising event for the Sajo family, they approved our proposal for this new category", said Alfred Llave, one of the event's supporters. "We are excited about having the opportunity to be record-setters, but even more excited to be able to help a family in need."

The campaign - Team Ross, Friends of Ross Sajo United Against Pancreatic Cancer - is a group of Filipinos and non-Filipinos raising funds for Ross Sajo, who has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and receiving chemotherapy.

Mrs. Sajo's husband, Jojo, has been working to provide for the family and care for his wife but recently received treatment for brain aneurysms, including costly embolization and radiation treatments, according to a news release.

"This event has brought the greater East Texas Filipino community closer, with many new friendships established," expressed Monina Mercado, the sister-in-law of Ross.

"The art of rolling eggrolls, also known as lumpia, is being passed onto the younger generation,"

The group has set up a fund at Southside Bank. The fund at the bank is under "Team Ross" and under Ross Sajo's name.

Earlier this month, the group held a smaller-scale rolling event at The Pot Pourri House in Tyler.
