Isaac drenches Central Gulf Coast, thousands without power

Posted: Updated:

NEW ORLEANS, LA (CBS) - Slow-moving Tropical Storm Isaac continues to drench the Central Gulf Coast region.

Thousands of people in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama are under states of emergency. Isaac has dumped more than a foot of rain in Louisiana and flooding has become a major concern. Dozens of people in Plaquemines Parish had to be rescued when flood waters pushed over the levees.

State leaders say they will intentionally puncture the levee walls in the parish in order to relieve the pressure. In other parts of the state, the storm's high winds have snapped power lines knocking out power to thousands of people.

Isaac is moving at only five miles-per-hour meaning the threat of storm surges and flooding will be around for at least another day.
