HOUSTON (KHOU) — A Houston mother and father caused their 8-month-old son's death when they left him alone in a bathtub while the two argued in an apartment parking lot, according to Houston police.

Roderick Cole and Gabrielle Cole were charged with criminally negligent homicide.

Investigators said on June 15, Roderick Cole put his 2-year-old and 8-month-old sons into a bathtub with running water and left the small children unattended.

He and his wife walked to the parking lot to put some clothes in the car, then got into a brief argument. The wife then drove away. Police said she knew the boys were alone in the tub.

After leaving the boys unsupervised for seven to 10 minutes, Roderick Cole went back inside to find his youngest son lying face down in the water.

He pulled the baby out, called 911 and began to perform CPR. The child did not survive.

The Medical Examiner said the toddler died as a result of complications from a near drowning and ruled the death a homicide.
