Fire danger 'very high' in some parts of East Texas

Posted: Updated:

EAST TEXAS (KYTX) - Fire officials are asking East Texans to be vigilant of fire dangers today, as winds and dry air have been incendiary devices for several blazes in the region.

So far today, firefighters have successfully contained multiple wildfires in the region, according to the Texas Forest Service. The largest fire was a 40-acre blaze in Houston County, near Pipeline Road about five miles north of Crockett. Also extinguished are a four-acre fire between Waskom and Elysian Fields, and a two-acre wildfire in northeast Upshur County.

This morning, the Texas Forest Service reported that much of the westernmost counties in East Texas are in high fire danger, from Tyler, Palestine and Crockett west to Kaufman, Navarro and Freestone counties. In addition, much of Anderson and Henderson counties are in "very high" fire danger.

The latest weather monitoring at Palestine Municipal Airport shows relative humidity below 40 percent and wind gusts in excess of 23 MPH, compared to light winds and 77 percent humidity 72 hours earlier.

Forest Service Assistant Chief Regional Fire Coordinator David Abernathy said Wednesday that he expected higher fire dangers this week because of Tropical Storm Isaac, due to winds that are pulling drier air from the north into the region.

"A small, benign fire can get out of hand in a hurry," Abernathy said.

Most of East Texas is under a wind advisory today, according to the National Weather Service.
