LUFKIN/ANGELINA COUNTY (KYTX) - Lufkin police said Jarred Hunt was merely a passenger in Jadelfrick Lumon Benton's vehicle when Benton was arrested, but Hunt grew inpatient waiting for a ride, so he took matters into his own hands and ended up in jail, too.
On Thursday, police stopped a vehicle on a traffic violation in the 1500 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Police said 18-year-old Benton, the driver, gave officers a fake name. Officers soon learned Benton's true identity and that he was wanted for felony injury to a child, so they arrested him for the warrant and for failing to identify a fugitive.
Hunt, 17, did not have a driver's license and was told that Benton's vehicle could not be released to him. Hunt said his brother would come to the scene and take custody of the vehicle, but as officers waited, Hunt hopped into the driver's seat of Benton's car and fled the scene.
Another officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle on Leach Street near Booker Street and arrested Hunt for driving without a license.
Both men were booked into the Angelina County Jail. The vehicle was released to a licensed driver.
Hunt posted $500 bond and was released from jail Thursday. Benton remains jailed on $1,500 bond. Both men have been arrested three times each since March on various charges, including assault and failure to attend school.
