TATUM/RUSK COUNTY (KYTX)  - For the first time ever, Tatum ISD eclipsed the 1,600-student threshold, and it means more money for the district.

Superintendent Dr. Dee Hartt released the district's second-day enrollment numbers on the school's website on Friday.

Tatum counted 1,640 students on Tuesday, its second day of classes. It marks a 3.6 percent increase from enrollment on the same day of the 2011-2012 school year.

Nearly one in five students, or 303 students total, are student transfers from other school districts. Longview ISD has the most transfer students in Tatum with 184 students, compared with 163 students in the previous year. Other districts with transfer students in Tatum ISD are Henderson, Pine Tree, Arp, Kilgore, Beckville, White Oak, Jefferson, Carthage, Spring Hill, Hallsville, and Marshall, whose number of transfers more than doubled from 19 students in 2011 to 46 students this year.

Tatum ISD enrollment has grown each year since 2005-06, when the district's second-day enrollment was 1,197 students. The school's enrollment has increased 37 percent in the past seven years.

Tatum school trustees budgeted for an average daily attendance of 1,519 students, but the current enrollment is projected to produce an average daily attendance of 1,574 students, which would increase revenue to the district by about $300,000, Hartt said.

Enrollment growth was a factor in the district presenting a $29.9 million bond package including construction of a new elementary school that voters approved with a more than 75 percent majority this past May.
